We are Unity, we are LGBTQ:
In Unity, the LGBTQ community is not just embraced by us, they are us. We recognize that everyone is equally loved and accepted by God because God is in each and every one of us. No one has any more or less God and no one has any more or less access or right to God. We are one, we are equal.
Jesus, Christianity & Marriage:
Jesus Christ lived and taught a message of non-judgment and inclusion, so we believe modern Christianity should mirror that teaching. In doing so, we make sure that all loving relationships have a right to marriage and perform marriages for people in love, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
LGBTQ Leadership in Unity:
The Unity movement welcomes and trains LGBTQ ministers, licensed Unity teachers, and Youth & Family Leaders. While no specific data is available, it is estimated that Unity has the most LGBTQ individuals in leadership roles per capita of any religion or movement today, with some of the largest LGBTQ congregations.
Unity’s formal “Statement of Diversity” from 1995:
We believe that all people are created with sacred worth. Therefore, we recognize the importance of serving all people within the Unity family in spiritually and emotionally caring ways. We strive for our ministries, publications and programs to reach out to all who seek Unity support and spiritual growth. It is imperative that our ministries and outreaches be free of discrimination on the basis of race, color, gender, age, creed, religion, national origin, ethnicity, physical disability or sexual orientation. Our sincere desire is to ensure that all Unity organizations are nondiscriminatory and support diversity… It is with love and in celebration of our unity, in the midst of our wondrous diversity, that we affirm this position.
Resources and Support:
Additionally, in 2011, Unity launched an LGBTQ Resource Center on its website to provide spiritual resources for the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender community. The resource center includes articles, podcasts, prayer support, and a list of Unity churches and centers around the country. Site resources are provided by teachers, authors and contributors both inside and outside the Unity movement.
